Setting Intentions for a NU Year!
Setting Your Intention - Journal Exercise
As we enter this new year, it’s important to check in with yourself and what you want to make happen in your life. So often a new year is seen as a new beginning, but if you don’t set your intentions clearly in a way that is easy for you to maintain, this year will only be a continuation of the previous.
In order to figure out how you want to approach your intention setting, we’ve created a journal exercise for you to follow. We call it Have, Be, Do:
Have
What do you want to have more of? Is this something tangible or something that cannot be seen (i.e. love, determination, kindness)? How do you imagine your life would change if you had more of these things? Do you think having more of this will enable you to bless others as well as yourself? If you took an honest look at your life now, how much of these things do you already have, and could you nurture what exists now to make it more abundant in the future?
What do you want to have less of? As mentioned above, is this something physical such as less clutter or something more emotional like less stress? Are you ready to let go of things in your life to attain your ‘less of’ goal? Can you let go of that closet filled with clothes no longer worn or let go of a relationship that prevents you from peace? This doesn’t have to be a complex answer here or it can be, it depends on what you’re working on in your life at this moment.
Be
Look over your answers above and write down who you need to be in order to make this a reality. If you want to have more deep relationships and less loneliness, are you willing to be the kind of person that gives their full attention to a friend or is always willing to be open about the hardships you’re experiencing?
Do
What do you need to do, what steps can you take right now to get where you want to go? If you want to be kinder to others, what can you do to start that pattern today? Maybe you begin with giving a compliment, even if it makes you uncomfortable. Your intention for your life is a big picture goal, so break it down into small and accessible actions that you can do everyday.
Reread
Take the time to now reread what you’ve written and circle the things that pop out at you. What phrases or themes do you notice appearing over and over again? What sentences make you feel emotional - those are the most truthful and should grab your attention.
Circle
Use the circled phrases and words to create your intention for this new year, and then come back to that again and again to keep you centered on what you consider the most important.
Revisit
While this is a great exercise for this month in particular, we encourage you to come back to this prompt anytime you’re feeling lost or confused on what you want. You could do this daily if that’s what it takes to give you some grounding in your life.
